Coluntdown to the Jan 1st
12.26.2007 five days to launch !
So it is down to the wire for the campaigns, for the candidates…and also for me. While most of you will be recuperating from the New Year’s celebration, in the early hours of January 1st, my crew and I will be heading to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the beginning of a unique 4000 miles journey . I too, will hit the road with my own “campaign” bus, not, however, to follow the candidates, but to talk with grass root activists and ordinary folks from across the country and across the ideological spectrum to find out how God is going to influence — or not — their vote. It is a journey that has never been atempted before. I will meet folks in rural truck stops, in small diners, on isolated farms and in churches, synagogues and mosques. I won’t ask who they’re voting for. I’m seeking a frank dialog about faith and politics as they perceive it from their very personal perspective. I will drive from Iowa through New Hampshire, down the East Coast to South Carolina , Florida, and west through the South to Oklahoma, where I will be on Super Tuesday. The journey will provide the spine for my film– A Journey Among the Believers (working title)–a cinematic essay exploring the role of religion in the 2008 presidential election campaign and in the country’s politics in general. You will be able to follow the journey by going to the project’s web site www.faith-politics-themovie.com
On the site, which will be promoted by European broadcasters as well as by Israel’s largest website, people around the world will be able to post their comments. Their questions will be posted via YouTube and emails and incorporated into my conversations with folks that I meet on the road. Forums and Community Boards will allow visitors from across the US and overseas to dialog with activists and ordinary folks during the month of the primaries and all the way to the election. My goal is to create an innovative Internet initiative that will transform the process of filming into an interactive process–a forum free for all to debate, discuss and explore the multitude of issues surrounding the role that religion plays in America’s political life. Although the site will be officially launched on January 1st ,and is not fully functional yet, you can get a taste of it now. (Starting January 1st I will also contribute to the site a video blog.)
The film is being produced for PBS , Channel 4 in the UK, ZDF/Arte (France and Germany) Canada (both French and English) and a variety of smaller European stations.
As we all know, the primaries this year are wide open and religion has played an important role in this campaign So I am excited that we will be right in the center of things and following it from our unique angle. So fasten your seat belts. January 1st is launch day!
